If reading at home has become stressful and unmanageable have a go at one of the following tried and tested methods:
Motivational Game Encourages Reading
Many children who struggle with reading will enjoy this motivational method for reading with more accuracy.
Often children will interpreter the pictures to read the words and this can be useful. However, if you’re looking for word for word accuracy this simple game is great fun? It is especially suitable for young children who love winning points.
Make each line of text a game. The first line has six words so you have six counters ready to win for this game. Each time a word is read correctly a point is awarded. You get the points if the word is incorrect and the child can have the chance to win the points back by trying the word again.
More ways to help your child read can be found in this Quick Reads book - 101 Ways To Get Your Child To Read
Buddy Reading
This is a great method for children who lose the flow of reading and get frustrated by words they can’t read. Ask you child to start reading and then any words he/she gets stuck on you say them straight away. No questions asked, just say them, even if you think they are easy and your child should know them, you just say them.
The Signal Method
this is similar to Buddy Reading but gives your child more control. If your child would like you to read the word, he gives you a simple signal to let you know. A tap of the thigh, click of the fingers, nod of the head.
The third method I don’t have a name for!
Decide between you how much you are going to read. Then ask your child which sentence, paragraph or page (depending on age) he/she would like to read as best they can really concentrating on all the sounds in the words. Alternatively, they can read the first paragraph then you read the rest until it is time to end.
Don’t worry that your child isn’t reading all of it, the important thing to remember is that they are reading without it becoming stressful and hence this avoids attaching negative thoughts to reading.
How do you know which method to use?
Try them all out, then ask your child which method to use. This means the reading is their idea and children always put more effort into their own ideas and their confidence with reading will grow.
